Poitou-Charentes faces the Atlantic Ocean, it has long stretches of sandy beaches with limestone cliffs, pine forests and beautiful countryside.

Places to visit

-La Rochelle, an historical and lively town

-Marais poitevin also known as the ‘Green Venice”, is a marshland with many canals. You can enjoy the scenery by boat, by bike or on horseback

-Ile de Ré, a small picturesque island, connected to La Rochelle by road, with more than 100km of cycling tracks

-Ile-d’Aix, 600 metres wide and 3 kms long, with lots of creeks, beaches and rocks, the central part is often covered by the spring tides

-Ile d’Oléron, the second biggest island in France after Corsica, with lots of nice beaches, also very popular with surfers

-Rochefort, a seaport

-Royan, a seaside resort

-Cognac, known for the production of brandy

-The abbey at St-Savin-sur-Gartempe, with its impressive medieval frescos, a world heritage site.

-Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and Talmont-sur-Gironde both classified as some of the ‘most beautiful villages in France’.

Lovely food: fresh seafood, oysters and goats cheese. A region famous for Échiré butter, Farci Poitevin (a staffing pate), Tourteau Fromagé (a cheesecake), Cognac and the famous aperitif, Pineau des Charentes.

 

Weather

With 2250 hours of sunshine a year, Poiteau-Charentes is the sunniest French region on the Atlantic coast of France

 

How to get there

By TGV train, from Paris gare Montparnasse, you can reach La Rochelle in just under 3 hours.

There are is an international airport in La Rochelle.
